The Xoloitzcuintli Club of America was formed on October 26, 1986, and incorporated in New York State on June 14, 1989. Membership was comprised of Xoloitzcuintli owners, breeders, handlers, and friends. The drive to achieve AKC full recognition of the Breed was spearheaded by Amy Fernandez, a well-known author who writes on all aspects of dog sports and competition.

The mission was to protect and promote the breed, and to eventually achieve full AKC recognition. The stud book was compiled by owners in the US who could provide a full three generation pedigree. Dogs imported from Mexico had three generation pedigrees from the Federacion Canofila Mexicano (Mexican Kennel Club). At this time the XCA standard was organized to follow a translation of the FCM Standard of 1975, but included all three sizes and allowed for Coateds, with delineations as to the correct coat. As the first standard to include the Coateds, the XCA/AKC Standard has been the foremost in considering them to be an equal to their Hairless brethren, with temperament and trainability the same, only the Coat is different.

2006 XCA REGIONAL - BEST OF BREED

Following communication received from AKC, a template was formed as to necessary steps to receive full recognition. This included a minimum number of dogs in the Studbook and a minimum number of household memberships. When the XCA Studbook was submitted, there were some dogs lacking a three generation pedigree, so that at the very last minute we were a number of dogs short. With the contribution from another US database, the XCUSA, the numbers required by AKC were submitted.

2008 XCA NATIONAL - BEST OF BREED

A verifiable history of the Club was part of the requisite elements – as were Membership Meetings, and activities, which included over 20 years of annual Independent Breed Specialties, held all across the United States. AKC helped with the required B Matches, by including one of the XCA Annual Specialties under that heading. A second B Match led to the final requirement – an Independent A Match, which includes creating and publishing a Premium List, as well as a Catalog. Our A Match was held on November 13th, 2011, The following year (2012) we held our first AKC National Specialty, which was our 25th XCA National.
